Permit to carry & renewal classes - Minnesota / Multi-State recognition Minnesota approved training organization and recognized by several states when apply for those permits. Three classes are offered by River Valley Training depending on your individual needs. The comprehensive new permit class walks through a street scenario of a confrontation, escalation, introduction of a firearm, the use of deadly force and the possible aftermath. It also covers types of carry, ammunition, holster pro & con, the selection of a carry handgun and much more. The renewal only is for those that need just the in-depth basics of the carry requirements of the Minnesota carry laws and includes national transport information and flying with a firearm. The new/renewal combination is a combination of the prior two class which cover Minnesota carry laws, but also basic holsters, handguns, ammunition selection These courses were developed specifically for Minnesota to meet state requirements and also give a student a solid background in the carrying of a firearm for self defense. This course is a Minnesota permit to carry course and not an introduction to handguns so a basic firearm knowledge is required to attend these permit to carry courses.

If a student does not have access to a handgun, River Valley Training can provide a handgun & ammunition for $10.00 to use in class for the mandatory live fire on the range. This should be arrange prior to the class to ensure that the needed firearm and ammunition is available on the day of the class.
Private classes are available for small groups, we do several every year for families, businesses or a group a friends that want to take the class together. Please contact us for the details.
NRA - FIRST Steps - Pistol
This is the NRA's beginner's course called First Steps that is designed for the novice shooter and is a good place to start for both men and women. It is approximately 4+ hours long with a hands-on technique and covers the basics such as handgun nomenclature, ammunition, the safe operation of a handgun and concludes with the opportunity to fire .22 rimfire handgun on the range. Cost for this NRA FIRST Steps Course is $75 per person which includes classroom, range, handgun and ammunition. Seating is very limited, so please register early to reserve your seat.
There are no other NRA FIRST Step classes currently scheduled at this time, but are always happy to schedule more depending on requests.

HR 218 - Federal Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004
Instruction and Firearms Training Standards for Retired Law Enforcement Officers in Minnesota. Rick Bruels is an approved instructor for retired Law Enforcement Officers that is recognized in Minnesota for the certification that meets Minnesota Department of Public Safety Firearms Training Standards. This course follows the state of Minnesota guidelines as required to apply for the federal carry permit for retired LEO's. This class is offered as required at the request of retired Minnesota Law Enforcement Officers. Cost for this class starts a $25 and up depending on number attending, location and any other fees associated with the class location. NOTE:This Federal LEO certification is usually scheduled the last week in April & September. Each LEO must sign up individually, no group sign ups.
If class size becomes too large to safely handle on the range, an overflow class will
be scheduled for the following Tuesday. Please be flexable to attend either date.
Handgun Skills Course
This course is for the shooter that wants to advance their holster and handgun skills. This is not a course for those that want to shoot a lot of ammunition, but designed around the proper technique and execution of the fundamentals of operating their handgun. This course covers the correct and safe draw, firing and holstering of a handgun while wearing a concealment garment. The basics of the proper grip, types of magazine reloads, clearing a malfunction and sight/trigger control. Range exercises covers several shooting exercises including single and multiple target engagement while firing multiple shots, shooting on the move, strong hand/weak hand only shooting, proper turning and firing. This course requires that the student supply - - Eye and ear protection - Concealment garment - 200 rounds of factory ammunition - Handgun in a minimum caliber of 9mm Luger (9x19) or .38 Special - A strong side belt holster and if an IWB holster is used, it must have a re-enforced mouth (no cross draw, shoulder, SOB, fanny pack, etc. type holsters for range safety reasons) - Dual magazine holder and 3 magazines or 2-3 speed loaders This equipment is required as described to do the live fire exercises on the range. If there is any questions on your equipment, please contact us before the class date to avoid any problems on the day of the class. Cost for this Handgun Skills Course is $100 per person and is limited to 4-8 students per class. Please contact River Valley Training for more information on this class.

You just need a place for the class such as a shop, garage or rec. room and a safe place to shoot, contact RVT with the date that works for you and we can set it up.
